A DOCUMENT PEOPLE AND SOFTWARE CAN READ

How to choose an ATS-friendly resume template.

An ATS-friendly resume template makes your experience easy to find and your PDF text easy to extract. Start with a single column, conventional headings and readable type. Formatting can help, but no template guarantees a result in every applicant tracking system.

Keep the document’s structure familiar

Use recognizable headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Put your name and contact details in the main document content, not an image or decorative icon. In the builder, optional sections can be switched off without deleting the data; empty sections are omitted from the output.

A useful experience entry starts with the role and employer, then dates, then short factual achievements. For example, a fictional entry might read “Product Designer — Studio North, April 2022–Present” followed by a clear sentence about the work. Replace generic claims with your own accurate evidence; the template does not verify what you enter.

Single column versus two columns

Single-column text has one obvious reading sequence. Sidebars can look attractive, but extraction can interleave content from different columns. A two-column page is a visual choice with a parsing tradeoff, rather than an automatic improvement.

LayoutIntended reading sequenceWhat to check
Single columnAlex Morgan → Summary → Experience → Education → SkillsHeadings stay beside the following content and entries remain in order.
Two-column sidebarMain story and sidebar are visually separate.A parser might insert “Skills” between a role and its dates. Verify the extracted order rather than assuming it follows the visual page.

ResumeFree’s Classic, Modern and Compact are the export choices. Elegant remains an experimental preview while its sidebar and continuation behavior are checked. Compare the free resume templates before choosing.

Use real text, then check the exported file

  1. Open the actual PDF you plan to send, not only the live editor preview.
  2. Select your name, a role and a few achievements. They should behave like text, rather than one large picture.
  3. Copy the resume into a plain text editor. Check that headings, employers, dates and bullets appear in a meaningful sequence. Look for missing accents, duplicated words or unexpected column interleaving.
  4. Inspect every page at readable zoom. Check that a long job entry continues without overlapping text and that no heading is stranded by itself.
  5. When an application portal parses the file, review its populated fields before submitting. Follow that employer’s format instructions if it requests another file type.

Text selection and copying are useful checks, not proof of compatibility with every ATS. ResumeFree does not upload resumes to third-party scoring services. You can run an extraction tool locally if you want another check; do not upload personal content just because a template page asks you to.

Keep typography practical

Use readable body text, enough contrast and consistent spacing. The builder’s font-size range is 10–12 points. Avoid making everything tiny to claim a one-page resume. Compact changes spacing; it does not silently remove text. Longer CVs can extend to more pages, with a supported output limit of ten pages.

Use A4 or US Letter to match the application’s instructions, and review the exported dimensions. If browser printing is your export path, check its paper size and disable browser-added headers and footers. The PDF export guide explains that step.
